Event Profile
The Ellora Festival is held in the Ellora Caves, situated at a distance of approximately 30 km from Aurangabad, a city in Maharashtra. It is festival of dance and music that is organized every year. UNESCO has declared the site of the Ellora Caves as a world heritage site. Some of the caves were excavated between 600 and 1000 AD and were cut out of the sloping side of the Chamadri hills.
These caves, around 34 in number, belong to Buddhists, Jain and Hindu faiths. Later, the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) discovered approximately 28 more caves. The caves of Ellora embody the iconographic as well as structural compulsions carried out by different faiths for almost 300 years. The magnum opus of theses caves is the Kailash Temple. World’s largest monolithic sculpture, it was sculpted over a period of 150 years, out of a rock by 7000 laborers.
Aurangabad Ellora Festival is organized to showcase some of the best talents of the region. Some of the most distinguished singers as well as dancers of the country participate in this festival, with the caves forming the ideal background. The Ellora Festival of Aurangabad also serves as the perfect way to experience the magnificent caves, which embody centuries of history and culture in them.
